Where Winnebago County Residents Take Hazardous Waste

Updated October 1, 2026

Winnebago County residents can drop off paint, solvents, pesticides, and batteries at the City of Rockford's free Household Hazardous Waste facility at 3315 Kishwaukee Street, open Saturdays 8am-4pm and Sundays noon-4pm. A junk removal crew cannot legally load this material with general household junk.

The free drop-off facility

The City of Rockford operates a free Household Hazardous Waste facility at 3315 Kishwaukee Street, open Saturdays 8am to 4pm and Sundays noon to 4pm. It takes the material a general cleanout crew can't: wet paint, solvents, pesticides, motor oil, and batteries. The facility is drop-off only; it doesn't pick up.

Why it's separated from a standard quote

Hazardous material isn't a pricing question, it's a legal one. Wet paint, solvents, pesticides, asbestos, and medical waste can't legally be loaded with general junk by any hauler. On a garage or shed cleanout specifically, it's worth pulling that shelf aside before the crew arrives, since it's common for exactly this material to be what's been sitting there longest.

The same facility handles e-waste too

The Hydraulic Road site (4665 Hydraulic Road, Tuesdays 2-5pm, Saturdays 9am-noon) is a separate, Winnebago County-wide electronics drop point, one of three in the county alongside Machesney Park and South Beloit. It's a different program from the hazardous waste facility above, so check hours for the specific material before the trip.
